How to make Bath Bombs! 🛁

Making Bath Bombs is a fun indoor activity for everyone and they can also be a great gift too. We're going to show a step by step guide on how to make your very own Bath Bombs. Once you get the hang of this easy technique you can create your own custom Bath Bombs in unique sizes, colours and scents. 

Equipment: 

1) Large Mixing Bowl

2) Suitable Moulds

3) Kitchen Scales

4) Hand Sprayer (containing clean cold water)

5) Gloves

Ingredients: 

300g Sodium Bicarbonate 

100g Citric Acid 

10ml of Fragrance or Essential Oils 

Colour - most food/cosmetic/soap liquid colours are fine i.e. ultramarines (not blue) or oxides will work.

Step 1: 

Mix the Sodium Bicarbonate and Citric Acid into a mixing bowl, sieving if needed. Continue to mix until you have a consistent texture. 

Always wear safety goggles/glasses and use protective gloves when soap-making to avoid injury from spills and splashes.

Step 2: 

If you're using liquid food or cosmetic/soap colours, you will need to add enough drops to get the desired colour, mixing it in quickly to avoid it fizzing up. If using a powdered colour, simply add a small quantity at a time and mix until you have your desired shade. Blend until you have a consistent colour throughout to avoid "spotting" of colours.

Step 3:

Mix 10ml of either fragrance or essential oil into the mixture. Most essential or fragrance oils will not cause the mixture to fizz, but certain citrus oils may, so if this happens, mix in quickly and thoroughly. Do not leave the mixture to stand or it will slowly start to set. 

Step 4: 

With a hand sprayer, spray a very small amount of water in the mixture so it can begin to hold together when lightly squeezed in your hand, it must not be too damp. You must ensure you are working the mixture all the time while doing this, it will prevent the mixture from fizzing up. 

Step 5:

Once this point is reached you need to work quickly to compress the mixture into your moulds. If you have 2 inch moulds then the mixture will make almost exactly 5 Bath Bombs. You will need 3 moulds, without clips, in halves ready to fill. If you do not have bath bomb moulds then you can use ice-cube trays, small yogurt pots or silicone baking moulds for cupcakes. 

Step 7:

Fill each half so they are slightly overfilled from the surface and press together for a few moments. You can now remove one half of the mould being careful not to let the Bath Bomb fall out. Press any leftover mix into any of the empty half moulds if you wish. Leave the Bath Bombs in the remaining half to set for 20-30 minutes. 

Step 8: 

After 20-30 minutes they should be quite hard. If they are, remove the Bath Bomb from the mould and leave it to dry. If they've not hardened enough, just leave them in their moulds a little longer and test again.

Step 9: 

You can now watch your marvellous creations fizz away! 🛁
